Ravi Sawhney

Ravi K. Sawhney, DDS, PhD brings a broad blend of expertise in health care and biomedical research to Fabiani & Company. He is a Molecular and Cellular Biologist and a practicing orthodontist, with almost a decade of experience as a health and science policy analyst in Washington, DC.
Dr. Sawhney served on Capitol Hill for four years, most recently in Senator Edward Kennedy’s health office in the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, working on an array of policy issues, including : drug safety and pricing, oral health, health professions training, stem cell and cloning research, Hurricane Katrina relief, health information privacy, and biodefense. Before that, he served in the House of Representatives with Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston, TX, handling issues before the Science Committee, advocating for a robust manned space program at NASA, and championing the medical centers and research institutions of Houston. He worked with the Congressional Black Caucus to address health disparities and improve access to care.
In 2006, Dr. Sawhney joined the Office of the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). There, he developed an intimate understanding of the federal biomedical research enterprise and organization, and the complex interplay of federal, state, industry, academic, and non-profit players in the health sector. He initiated and led multiple strategic projects, working with top-level scientists, economists, and clinicians to increase the impact of biomedical research on human health, and to explain the value of NIH’s work to the public and policy makers. He also served as the project officer on the $6 million per year “umbrella contract” between the NIH and the National Academies of Science.
Starting in spring of 2009, Dr. Sawhney served for a year in the Office of Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services. There, he managed multiple high-level interagency working groups, bringing professionals together from across the Department, including CDC, NIH, and AHRQ, to develop better public health campaigns and prevention strategies.
Dr. Sawhney earned a BS in Biology and a DDS at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed his MSD in Orthodontics and PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Washington. He continues to serve as a volunteer orthodontist treating active duty military servicemen and servicewomen at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda.
